Help to help themselves

Since 2009 the PHW Group together with its companies and WIESENHOF has been supporting the registered association “Kinder Afrikas e.V.”

The first project of Kinder Afrikas e.V. in 2008 was the building of a school for an orphanage on the outskirts of Monrovia, the capital of Liberia.

Between 1989 and 2003 Liberia was engulfed in a devastating civil war which deprived children in particular of many things – family, security and a future.

In order to be able to offer the orphans a better future, Kinder Afrikas e.V. used donations and the profits of a Christmas card selling campaign to finance the building of the orphanage school.

The Monrovia Training Academy (MTA) was opened in April 2009.

The next step in 2010/11, with the support of the PHW Group, is for MTA to set up a chicken farm for 300-400 hens fulfilling all the preconditions for appropriate free-range husbandry.
The small poultry farm is a multifaceted basis for a better future and sustainability:

  • The school has a self-sufficient supply of eggs and chicken
  • What it doesn’t need for itself can be sold and provides a steady income for the Monrovia Training Academy
  • A training programme teaches pupils about keeping poultry and chicken husbandry
  • Upon passing the course, graduates receive a small stock with which they can start a business and feed a family
